Match Report
Marlborough College Malaysia Boys-U18A vs  SMK Medini
On: Saturday, 14 Oct 2017
Venue: at Home

The final of the Straits tournament saw a repeat of our first game of the tournament against Medini, which had previously been very equal and finished 0-0.

The game started off cagey, with both teams having possession equally, MCM making chances, whilst Medini looked dangerous in flashes. The game mirrored that of the first match in the tournament, equal and looked as though either team could nick a goal. However, I believed this time we looked the stronger outfit. A few last ditch professional fouls saw potential huge chances turn into free-kicks that MCM failed to take advantage of. A lack of exposure on the width saw us fail to turn opportunities for chances into anything of any real quality. The boy's kept at it and were aggrieved to not be awarded a penalty which would have changed the match at that vital moment.

Another decision saw a free-kick given against MCM when perhaps it should have been for us on the half-way line, which Medini took full advantage of. A couple of mistakes in quick succession saw us simply and cruelly punished, but unfortunately, big moments in big matches make all the difference.

I was really gutted for the boys as I felt we had edged the game and deserved to have nicked a goal, more so than the original 0-0 outing. It was a deflated mood within the group as we had come so close and felt some disappointment in decisions not falling our way. Unfortunately that is football, and I hope that the boy's learn from this. Nonetheless, I was extremely proud of the effort, attitude and commitment to the cause that every boy showed throughout the final and indeed the whole tournament. One game did not change that fact, nor did the performance.

Some brilliant individual and team performances, some real progress and signs of willingness to listen and improve always. Congratulations on 2nd place boys.

Well done again - Mr Harvey & Mr Moriarty.

MVP: Diederick - Provided excellent width. Some excellent wing play and was unfortunate to be brought down with some cynical challenges in last ditch positions which would have led for fantastic opportunities for a chance in the box.

Score: 0-1
